    • Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy

    Child and Family

    Occupational therapy and physical therapy are beneficial to babies, children, and teenagers with support needs for many reasons.

    Both can significantly improve your child's overall quality of life by:

    • Promoting inclusion through sports, recreational activities, and education with other children
    • Helping to prevent secondary complications like muscle tightness or lung infections
    • Enhancing motor skills, such as balance, coordination, strength, endurance, and mobility
    • Improving mental health from lowered stress, anxiety, and social isolation, while increasing self-confidence, and the ability to handle challenges.

    Our therapists work closely with your family to address your concerns and devise a plan to help your child succeed. 

    Our physiotherapy and occupational therapy programs are available to children in Powell River and qathet.

    Although these programs are free, there may be a waitlist.

    Physiotherapy

    Our physiotherapy program aims to help children with various challenges, such as:

    • Physical disabilities
    • Gross motor skill difficulties
    • Developmental disabilities

    It is available for children from birth to kindergarten.

    We offer appointments from Monday - Friday with flexible hours and locations to meet your family's schedule.

    Occupational Therapy

    Early Intervention Occupational Therapy supports children to engage in their meaningful, everyday activities. The program uses a child-centered approach to facilitate their growth and evelopment in areas such as: 

    • Sensory processing: receiving, interpreting and responding to sensations
    • Regulation: our ability to move through experiences and emotions, to feel safe in our bodies, and engaged with our external world (including emotion regulation and self-regulation).
    • Perceptual and cognitive skills: the ability to process and apply information (e.g. sequencing, copying)
    • Fine motor skills: the ability to use the small muscles in our bodies for everyday tasks requiring precision (e.g. drawing, buttoning). 
    • Self-care: participation in activities we do to meet our primary needs, including washing, dressing, toileting and feeding. 
    • Play: the foundation for our ability learn, create and interact

    Early Invention Occupational Therapy is available for children ages 0 – 5 (before entering kindergarten).

    Your child does not need a diagnosis to access services. We support children with different types of developmental delays.

    Support is provided in settings that suit your family’s needs, including the Cranberry Child Development and Family Resource Centre, home or daycare.

    Once you are referred, our intake clinician will phone you to collect further information.
