What Is a Social Enterprise? And Why Kindred ReBuild Matters

Most businesses have an end goal in mind. From one company to the next, it could be to maximize profits for owners and shareholders, create something to pass on to children, or simply make a job for oneself.

Within that mix, you will find businesses that prioritize profits for shareholders (think Walmart and Amazon), while others donate a certain percentage of sales to their preferred cause (like Tentree or Bombas).

A social enterprise's exclusive goal is to put its mission above profits -- profit is a means to an end, not an end in itself.

At Kindred ReBuild, that's precisely what we do.

What Is a Social Enterprise?

A social enterprise is a mix between a non-profit and a business. It earns money like a business but reinvests its profits to support a social cause, like helping people, protecting the planet, or solving a problem in the community.

Instead of putting money into shareholders' pockets, social enterprises use their profits to do good. That might mean creating jobs for people who experience barriers to work, reducing waste, or supporting important programs — just like we do at Kindred ReBuild.

Why Do Social Enterprises Matter?

Social enterprises are changing the way we think about business. They show us that it's possible to create innovative goods and services while earning an income and making a difference at the same time.

Here's how social enterprises help local communities

  • They create local jobs — often for people who struggle to find work elsewhere.
  • They solve real problems — like food insecurity, waste, or a lack of access to goods and services.
  • They put money back into the community — instead of sending it away to big corporations.
  • They give people a purpose — many social enterprises help people build confidence and skills.

Now let's take a closer look at Kindred ReBuild — our very own social enterprise in qathet.

What Is Kindred ReBuild?

Kindred ReBuild is a social enterprise run by inclusion powell river. It's a second-hand store that sells donated furniture, housewares, and building supplies. But it's much more than a thrift shop.

Kindred gives new life to good items and makes everyday essentials more affordable for everyone. It's part of the circular economy, where items are reused and repurposed instead of being discarded.

And every dollar spent at Kindred goes back into the community.

If we want to sustain quality and equitable human life on planet earth, businesses of the future need to be regenerative – giving back more than they take, rather than the current model of take, make, and waste.

How Does Kindred ReBuild Support inclusion?

At inclusion powell river, we support people of all abilities to live full, meaningful lives. Kindred helps us do that in a big way.

Here's how:

1. Real Work Experience

Kindred provides individuals with a space to acquire job skills in a safe and supportive environment. From stocking shelves to helping customers, there are many ways to get involved. These opportunities help build confidence and prepare people for other jobs in the community.

2. Inclusive Hiring

Kindred is proud to hire people with diverse abilities. We believe everyone deserves a chance to work and contribute. At Kindred, people aren't just "fitting in" — they belong. They are an essential part of the team.

3. Volunteer Opportunities

Not everyone is ready for paid work. That's okay. Volunteering at Kindred is a great way to learn, give back, and connect with others. Volunteers are an essential part of what makes Kindred so special.

4. Program Support

The money raised at Kindred helps fund other programs at inclusion powell river. That includes everything from housing and community support to programs for children and families. When you shop at Kindred, you're helping all those things happen.

Why It Matters

In a small town like ours, it's easy to feel like you need to go elsewhere to make a difference. However, when you shop at or donate to Kindred ReBuild, you're creating change right here in your own community.

🌟You're helping someone land their first job.

🌟 You're supporting a mom or dad who needs a safe place to raise their kids.

🌟 You're giving someone with a disability the chance to feel seen and valued.

🌟 You're keeping a perfectly good couch out of the landfill.

That's the power of a social enterprise.

How You Can Help

There are a few simple ways to support Kindred ReBuild:

  • Donate your gently used furniture, housewares, or tools.
  • Shop at the store — you never know what treasure you'll find.
  • Spread the word to friends, family, and neighbours.
  • Volunteer your time — even a few hours a week makes a big difference.

Doing Good Business

Kindred ReBuild shows us that doing good and doing business can go hand in hand. It's not just a store — it's a movement. A place where people matter more than profits. Where waste becomes opportunity. And where everyone is welcome.

Come and visit us at Kindred. Shop intentionally. Support your community. And be part of something great!
